Headless CMS

Headless CMS are content management systems in which the content and presentation layers are decoupled from each other. The backend serves as a content repository. The content is made available for display on various frontends via an API interface (RESTful or GraphQL). The name “headless” comes from the fact that the body (the backend with all content and data) is separated from the head (the visual level). This gives developers the freedom to use any technology they want to implement the backend. And authors can deliver their content on all relevant digital channels, including apps, smart devices, and AR/VR applications in addition to the website. Traditional CMS

In traditional, monolithic CMS, on the other hand, the backend and frontend are firmly linked. Everything stored in the backend in terms of content and data is displayed on a fixed presentation layer. This approach has its own advantages and disadvantages compared to headless systems, and traditional CMS are a proven option for single-channel publishing. Storyblok and Contentful in comparison

Although Storyblok and Contentful differ in some respects, they share the general characteristics of headless systems. Both CMSs are used purely for backend management, with the frontend completely decoupled. This allows for centralized content management for display on various interfaces, with the associated design freedom. Basically, both systems can be used to implement similar website projects.

Most of the differences lie in the development approaches, which are less noticeable to the end user. However, Storyblok scores points thanks to its visual editor, which makes content maintenance particularly user-friendly. Despite the decoupling of the presentation layer, content can be entered with a live preview. To do this, the editor accesses the corresponding layers, usually the website frontend. Headless vs. Decoupled CMS

Both headless CMS and decoupled CMS separate the backend from the frontend, allowing content to be reused across different channels. However, headless systems focus entirely on the backend and make the maintained content available via the selected API; the frontend is not connected to the CMS. In contrast, a decoupled CMS contains one or more presentation layers. Although these are separate and can therefore be developed with tools other than the backend, developers are limited to a selection of defined templates that work ideally with the CMS. This means that decoupled CMSs fall between headless systems and classic CMSs in terms of design freedom and flexibility.
