Digital accessibility enables people with disabilities to participate independently in digital life. At the same time, accessible web design contributes significantly to a good user experience and usability of your website. For a successful accessible website, not only linguistic and visual aspects must be taken into account, but above all technical requirements must be met. Responsive design and intuitive navigation are essential and significantly determine how your website functions.

A website is accessible when it makes information available in a way that is understandable to all visitors, regardless of their mental or physical condition. This means that people with motor impairments, visual impairments or hearing impairments, for example, can easily consume the content of the website. Accessible websites are therefore not only an important step toward greater inclusion and equality, but also automatically increase your target audience, as more people can take advantage of what you have to offer.

While digital accessibility was previously regulated by BITV 2.0 (Barrierefreie-Informationstechnik-Verordnung, Accessible Information Technology Ordinance) and only affected federal public authorities, the issue of accessibility will also become relevant for many companies in the future. The reason for this is the new Accessibility Enhancement Act (BFSG), which will come into force on June 28, 2025.
The BFSG adapts all existing accessibility regulations in accordance with the BITV, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and the Disability Equality Act to the EU Accessibility Directive (European Accessibility Act). The aim of the law is to ensure equal participation in digital services for people with disabilities, limitations, and older people.
Accessibility affects us all. Although the BFSG focuses on people with disabilities, we all benefit from accessible digital services. Even temporary physical limitations, visual impairments or simply poor reception require websites with ease of use, strong contrasts, alt tags and many other simplifying factors. Accessible websites enable all people to participate equally in all aspects of everyday life that take place online at any time, thus contributing to an inclusive and non-discriminatory society.
Even though accessibility is not a direct ranking factor, Google rewards accessible websites. This is because accessible sites generally have very good usability and the more user-friendly and accessible a website is, the better its ranking will be. At the same time, certain aspects of accessibility, such as simple and understandable texts, help crawlers to decode and correctly classify the content of a website.
With an accessible website, you can expand your target audience in two ways. On the one hand, you simply give more people access to your content and offerings and on the other hand, a good ranking resulting from accessibility leads to more visibility and traffic on your site. The result: more visitors, more leads, more conversions.
Do you have questions about digital accessibility?
